Qantas Status Credits Explained: Why Elite Status Is Worth Chasing (Especially During Double Status Credits)

Status Credits are the currency of loyalty, not spend. Here is how they work, what each tier gets you, and why a Double Status Credits window is the best time to make your move.

Perk Society Guide  •  2026

Key Takeaways

Qantas Points are what you spend. Status Credits are how you level up through the membership tiers.

Double Status Credits promotions effectively halve the flying needed to reach your next tier.

Gold (oneworld Sapphire) is the sweet spot for most travellers, unlocking lounge access and premium check-in.

Retention thresholds for Gold and Platinum are rising in 2027, so locking in status sooner rather than later is worth considering.

Status Credits vs Qantas Points

Qantas Points and Status Credits are earned together on eligible flights, but they do very different jobs. Points are your spending currency. You redeem them for flights, upgrades, hotels and more. Status Credits are your loyalty currency. You cannot spend them. They exist purely to move you up (and keep you at) a membership tier, and they reset each membership year.

The simplest way to think about it: points are what you spend, status credits are how you level up.

What are Double Status Credits?

A handful of times a year, Qantas runs a limited-time promotion where members can choose to earn double Status Credits (instead of double points) on eligible Qantas-operated flights booked within a short window. Because the fare you pay does not change but the credits you earn double, this is genuinely the cheapest and easiest way to accelerate toward elite status.

Current offer: book by 2 September 2026

Register your choice of double Qantas Points or double Status Credits via the Qantas App or qantas.com. You can only pick one, and it applies to every booking made during the window. You can view or change your choice until the window closes.

Book by 11:59pm AEST on 2 September 2026. The booking window opened 26 August 2026.

Travel between 3 September 2026 and 14 August 2027, giving you almost a full year to take the flights.

Only Qantas-operated flights with a QF flight number on the ticket are eligible. This includes QF flights operated by Alliance Airlines, Eastern Australia Airlines and Sunstate Airlines. Jetstar, Emirates, American Airlines and other partner or codeshare flights do not count.

Bonus: you can also earn double points (6 per $1) on Qantas Hotels and Qantas Holidays bookings made during the same window. Excludes Airbnb.

A trip that would normally take two flights to earn enough credits might now take one. If you have been sitting on the fence about reaching your next tier, this is the window to move.

Why would anyone want status?

Status is not just a badge. It changes how you actually experience air travel. The benefits compound the more you fly, and even Silver or Gold can make a noticeable difference on a single big trip.

What status gets you

Lounge access at Qantas Club and oneworld partner lounges (from Gold).

Priority everything: check-in, security (where available), boarding and baggage handling.

Extra baggage allowance, handy for anyone who travels for work or with kids.

Seat and upgrade priority, giving you a better shot at exit rows, extra legroom, and complimentary upgrades.

Bonus points earning, with higher tiers earning a bigger multiplier on the same flights.

For frequent travellers, these add up to real time and money saved. For occasional flyers, even reaching Gold can transform your next international trip.

The Qantas Frequent Flyer tiers

Qantas has five membership tiers. You move up by earning enough Status Credits within a membership year, and you need at least four eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights along the way.

Tier SC to Attain SC to Retain Key Benefits
Bronze Starting tier — Standard points earning, redeem for flights and rewards
Silver 300 250 Priority phone, check-in, boarding, extra baggage, preferred seating
Gold 700 600 Lounge access (Qantas Club + intl partner), premium security, higher earn rate
Platinum 1,400 1,200 First class lounges, priority waitlisting, stronger upgrade priority
Platinum One 3,600 3,600 Highest upgrade priority (7 days out), waived change fees, dedicated VIP team
Heads up: retention thresholds are rising

Qantas has flagged that retention thresholds for Gold and Platinum are set to rise later in 2027 as part of ongoing program changes. If you are close to a tier, it is worth locking in status sooner rather than later while the current thresholds still apply.

Which tier should you aim for?

For most people, Gold (oneworld Sapphire) is the sweet spot. It is the tier where the biggest jump in benefits happens: lounge access, premium security lanes, and a meaningful points earning boost. The gap between Bronze/Silver and Gold is transformative. The gap between Gold and Platinum is valuable but incremental.

If you fly domestically a few times a year and take one or two international trips, Gold is achievable during a DSC window without rearranging your life. Platinum requires serious commitment, typically suited to genuine road warriors flying most weeks.

Platinum One is a tier most people will never reach (3,600 status credits is an enormous amount of flying), but if your work has you crossing time zones every week, the benefits are outstanding.

The bottom line

Status Credits are the currency of loyalty, not spend. The current DSC offer (book by 2 September 2026, travel until August 2027) effectively halves the flying needed to reach the tier you want. With retention thresholds for Gold and Platinum set to rise in 2027, now is the time to lock in status while it is still achievable at the current levels.

Knowing which routes earn the most Status Credits per dollar is the difference between reaching Gold in three flights or six. Our Elite members get access to detailed route-by-route status run guides showing exactly which flights to book, plus real-time alerts the moment DSC offers drop.
